Choosing PTZ cameras
A PTZ camera covers a wide area by panning, tilting and zooming, so one unit can replace several fixed cameras on a perimeter, campus or yard. It sees one place at a time, so keep fixed cameras on the points that must always be recorded.
- Optical zoom
- The range offers 25x, 32x and 45x zoom. Optical zoom keeps detail at distance, while digital zoom only enlarges pixels, so leave it out when you judge reach.
- Resolution
- 2 MP is enough for most monitoring. 4 MP and 5 MP help when you also need to review a wide scene without zooming in.
- IR range
- Models are rated for 100 m, 180 m and 300 m of IR. Ratings apply in open, clear conditions and fall in fog, dust and rain, so choose the next band above the distance you need.
- Power
- Full-load draw runs from about 17 W to 25 W with IR and movement, which is more than a standard 802.3af port can supply. Plan for 802.3at (PoE+, up to 30 W per port) or the DC supply named on the datasheet.
- Tracking, presets and tours
- Auto tracking follows a person or vehicle that triggers a rule, and works best in scenes with few moving objects and enough light. Presets and tours cover a set of fixed positions, and power-off memory returns the camera to its last position after a restart.
- Mounting
- A PTZ camera moves, so mount it on a rigid pole or wall bracket rated for its weight. A flexible mount causes blur at high zoom.
Installation and compatibility
- Fit surge protection and proper earthing on outdoor poles. Tall poles in open ground attract lightning-induced surges.
- Judge the final position with test footage at maximum zoom and the real target distance. Heat haze and vibration affect long views.
- Budget the PoE switch with the camera's maximum draw, not 15.4 W per port, and leave 20 to 25% headroom.
