Choosing HD cameras
HD analog cameras send video to a DVR over coaxial cable, which makes them a practical choice where cable is already installed or the site has no network. Choose the camera resolution to suit the DVR you have or plan to buy.
- Resolution
- 2.4 MP suits rooms, shopfronts and corridors. 5 MP adds detail for wider scenes, but the DVR must support 5 MP on that channel or the camera may show no picture.
- Signal format
- Most models can switch between HDCVI, AHD, TVI and CVBS output, and most DVRs in this range detect the format on each channel. Confirm that the DVR supports the camera's resolution in the format you plan to use.
- Dome or bullet
- Domes suit ceilings and are harder to redirect. Bullets suit walls and long, narrow views and are quick to aim. Check the housing material and the ingress protection rating for outdoor positions.
- IR range
- IR range options are 20 m, 30 m and 40 m. Rated range applies in open, clear conditions and falls in dust, fog and near reflective surfaces, so choose the next step up for outdoor yards.
- Audio
- Built-in microphones send sound over the same coaxial cable, so the DVR needs coaxial audio inputs on the channels you use. Two-way audio cameras pair with the two-way audio DVR series.
- Power draw
- Cameras run from 12 V DC and draw roughly 2 to 9 W with IR on. Add up the maximum current of every camera, and measure the voltage at the far end of long cable runs.
Installation and compatibility
- Use coaxial cable with a bare copper video core. As general guidance, HD analog signals travel a few hundred metres on good RG59-type cable and less at 5 MP, so test the longest run before cabling the whole site.
- Crimp or compression-fit BNC connectors with care. A poor termination is a common cause of flicker and noise.
- Keep video cable away from mains wiring, and cross it at right angles where the two meet.
