Choosing processors

Choose a processor for the workload first, then confirm that the socket, chipset and memory type of the motherboard match. Platform fit matters more than core count or clock speed.

Socket and platform: A processor fits one socket family. Current AMD desktop processors use AM5, with AM4 for earlier Ryzen, and current Intel desktop processors use LGA1851 or LGA1700. Check the motherboard's CPU support list, because a newer generation in the same socket can need a BIOS update.
Cores and threads: Four to six cores handle office work, accounts and browsing. Eight or more cores help with content creation, virtual machines and heavy multitasking, and single-core speed still sets how responsive everyday software feels.
Integrated graphics: A processor with integrated graphics can drive a display without a graphics card, which suits office and CCTV viewing PCs. Intel processors with an F suffix, and some AMD models, have no integrated graphics and need a graphics card.
Power and cooling: Check the rated power and whether a cooler is included. Some boxed processors include one, but many high-end and overclocking-capable models do not, so plan a separate cooler.
Boxed or OEM: Boxed processors come in retail packaging. OEM (tray) processors are sold without the box and normally without a cooler, and are meant for system builders. Warranty terms are as per the brand, so confirm them with the supplier.

Installation and compatibility

Check the cooler's mounting kit against the socket before you buy. Many coolers support several sockets but not all.
Update the BIOS before you fit a new processor generation to an older board.
Handle processors by the edges, match the alignment marker to the socket, and lower the retention lever without force.
