Choosing batteries
Choose a battery by the voltage and capacity your UPS or backup system specifies, and replace batteries in complete sets. A wrong capacity, or old and new batteries mixed together, shortens the life of the whole bank.
- Voltage and bank size
- SMF batteries are 12 V units. The UPS decides how many are connected in series, and the number is stated on the UPS label, so keep that number and match the bank voltage exactly.
- Capacity in Ah
- Capacity is rated in ampere-hours (Ah), usually at the 10 or 20 hour rate. A higher Ah gives longer backup, but a small UPS charger takes much longer to recharge a larger battery, so check the charger rating first.
- Size and terminals
- Check the physical size and the terminal type so that the battery fits the UPS tray and connectors. Small batteries use F1 or F2 tab terminals, and larger ones use bolt terminals.
- SMF construction
- SMF (valve-regulated lead acid) batteries need no water topping. They can be mounted upright or on their side but not upside down, and flooded batteries made for inverters are a different type and are not interchangeable.
- Date of manufacture
- Check the date code. Lead-acid batteries lose charge on the shelf, so a battery that has been stored for several months should be charged before use.
- Replacing in sets
- Replace every battery in a bank together, with the same make, capacity and age. One weak battery pulls down the others.
Installation and compatibility
- Switch off and unplug the UPS before replacing batteries. Check polarity, use insulated tools and keep metal objects away from the terminals.
- Keep batteries cool and ventilated. Heat shortens life, and a battery that swells or leaks should be replaced at once.
- Hand used batteries to an authorised recycler, as Indian battery waste rules expect.
