Choosing biometric devices

Choose a biometric device by the service it must work with, because authentication projects specify certified devices. After that, check the sensor, the host computer support and the cable.

Certification
For Aadhaar authentication, the device must be certified under UIDAI's registered device scheme and its registered device (RD) service must be installed. Confirm the model's current certification status with the brand before you order for a project.
Sensor type
Optical and capacitive sensors behave differently with dry, wet and worn fingers. If your users do manual work, test the device with representative users before you buy in quantity.
Single or multi finger
Thumb impression and single-finger devices suit authentication of one person at a time. Enrolment projects that capture several fingers or other traits need a device built for that purpose.
Computer and software support
These devices connect over USB and need drivers and, for authentication, the RD service. Check the operating system versions supported and whether your software vendor has tested the model.
Durability
Counter devices are handled all day. Look for a detachable USB cable, a scratch-resistant scanning surface and a cleaning procedure from the maker.

Installation and compatibility

  • Keep the drivers and the RD service up to date. Authentication can fail if the RD service or the device certificate is out of date.
  • Place the device on a stable surface at a comfortable height, and show users how to place the finger flat over the sensor.
  • Clean the sensor with a soft cloth as the maker advises, and do not use solvents.
