    Choosing motherboards

Start with the processor socket and memory type, because they decide which CPUs and RAM a board accepts. Form factor, chipset and expansion then decide whether it suits the cabinet and the build.

    CPU socket and platform
AM5 takes Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series processors, and AM4 takes Ryzen 5000 and earlier. LGA1851 takes Intel Core Ultra 200S, and LGA1700 takes 12th, 13th and 14th generation Core. Check the board's CPU support list and BIOS version for the exact processor.
    Memory type
AM5 and LGA1851 boards take DDR5 only, and AM4 boards take DDR4 only. LGA1700 boards are built for either DDR4 or DDR5, and the two are not interchangeable: modules do not fit the other slot.
    Chipset tier
Entry chipsets such as A520, H610, H810 and B840 suit office PCs, and B-series chipsets suit most builds. X and Z series add more PCIe lanes, M.2 slots and USB ports, and on Intel, CPU overclocking needs a Z-series board and a K-series processor.
    Form factor
ATX (305 x 244 mm) offers the most slots and fits mid-tower cabinets. Micro ATX (244 x 244 mm) has fewer PCIe slots and suits compact cabinets, and Mini-ITX (170 x 170 mm) has one expansion slot and suits small builds. A cabinet that takes a larger size also takes the smaller ones.
    Power delivery
Processors with many cores, or those set up for overclocking, draw more power. Pair them with boards that have a heatsinked power delivery section and a higher phase count, and use a basic board only with lower-power processors.
    M.2, PCIe and connectivity
Count the M.2 slots, check which are PCIe 5.0 or 4.0, and check whether any share lanes with SATA ports. Also check the rear ports and networking, and whether Wi-Fi is included, as some boards have Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 and some have none.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Update the BIOS before fitting a newer processor generation to an older chipset board. Some boards have a USB BIOS flash feature that works without a processor installed.
    • Enable the XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) profile in the BIOS so that memory runs at its rated speed. Fit two modules in the slots the manual names for dual channel, usually the second and fourth.
    • On a new DDR5 platform the first start can take a few minutes while the memory is trained. Wait before assuming a fault.
    • Connect the 24-pin motherboard power and the CPU power connector or connectors, one or two 8-pin, before the first start.
