Choosing dash cameras
Choose a dash camera by the views you need, the storage it accepts and how it is powered. For taxis and fleet vehicles, GPS, a hardwire kit and a cabin view can matter as much as resolution.
- Channels
- Single-channel models record the road ahead. Dual and triple-channel models add a rear view and, on some models, a cabin camera for taxis and fleet vehicles.
- Resolution
- Front cameras range from 2 MP to 8 MP. Higher resolution helps when you need to read the number plates of vehicles ahead, but it needs a larger card and a faster write speed.
- Memory card
- Use a card rated Class 10 and U3 or better, and check the maximum card size on the datasheet, which is 512 GB or 1 TB on these models. Dash cameras write continuously and wear cards quickly, so choose a high-endurance card and replace it on a schedule.
- Power and parking mode
- Cameras run from a 12 V to 24 V vehicle supply, so they suit cars and trucks. Parking monitoring needs a hardwire kit to a permanent supply, with a low-voltage cut-off that protects the vehicle battery.
- Supercapacitor or battery
- A supercapacitor tolerates heat better than a lithium cell, which matters in a parked vehicle in summer. Check the operating temperature range on the datasheet.
- GPS and connectivity
- GPS adds location and speed to each clip, and Wi-Fi lets you view and download clips on a phone. A 4G model also sends live video and alerts, and needs a data SIM.
Installation and compatibility
- Mount the camera behind the rear-view mirror where it does not block the driver's view, within the area the wipers clear.
- Route cables along the headliner and pillar trim, and keep them clear of airbag zones.
- Format the card in the camera when you fit it, and play back a clip after installation to confirm that recording works.
