Choosing toner, ink and ribbons

Consumables must match the printer model exactly. Use the code printed on the old cartridge or in the printer manual, instead of choosing by brand or colour.

Model code: Cartridge, toner and ribbon codes are tied to printer families, and similar-looking items often do not fit or work. Take the code from the old consumable or the printer manual.
Ink, toner or ribbon: Inkjet printers use ink cartridges, or refill bottles in ink tank models. Laser printers use toner cartridges, and some also need a separate drum unit, while dot matrix printers use ribbons.
Page yield: Yield is the number of pages a cartridge prints under a standard test, which for black laser toner is ISO/IEC 19752 at 5% coverage. Heavy graphics and photos use more than the quoted yield.
Refill kits: Refill kits and ink bottles suit tank printers and refillable cartridges. Fill each colour tank with the matching bottle, and do not overfill.
Dot matrix ribbons: Ribbons are model-specific cassettes. Check the ribbon code for your printer model before you order.
Storage: Keep cartridges in their packs, upright and away from sun and heat. Use them within the date on the pack.

Installation and compatibility

Rock a new toner cartridge gently from side to side before fitting it, and remove all tapes and seals.
Print a nozzle check after fitting a new inkjet cartridge, and run head cleaning if lines are missing.
Do not mix ink types, and do not refill beyond what the maker advises.
