    Choosing power supplies

Choose a power supply for the system's total load, the connectors the graphics card needs and the efficiency level. Leave headroom, because an undersized unit is a common cause of random shutdowns.

    Wattage
Add the maximum power of the processor and graphics card to about 100 W for the rest of the system, then add 20 to 30% headroom. Follow the recommended PSU rating on the graphics card's datasheet.
    Efficiency rating
80 PLUS levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) set minimum efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% load, and higher levels waste less power as heat. Check which input voltage the rating applies to, because some units are rated at 230 V only.
    Graphics card connectors
The supply must have the connector the card needs: 8-pin PCIe, or the 16-pin 12V-2x6 connector (12VHPWR) on current RTX 50 series cards. Units marked PCIe 5.0 ready include the 16-pin cable, so no adapter is needed.
    Modular or fixed cables
Modular units let you connect only the cables you use, which tidies the build and improves airflow. Fixed-cable units suit simple builds in roomy cabinets.
    Input range and protection
    Input ranges differ: 100 to 240 V on full-range units, and 155 to 240 V or 200 to 240 V on others. Use a UPS or stabiliser where mains voltage dips, and look for over-voltage, over-power, short-circuit, under-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection.
    Size
ATX supplies are 150 mm wide and 86 mm high. Check the depth against the cabinet, especially with a PSU shroud and modular cables, and check that the cabinet takes a standard ATX unit.

    Installation and compatibility

    • Use only the cables supplied with the unit. Modular cable pinouts differ between makes and models, and a wrong cable can damage components.
    • Fit the supply with its fan facing a vent: down where the cabinet has a filtered bottom intake, up where it does not.
    • Some supplies with active PFC can shut down on UPS units with a stepped (simulated) sine wave output. Use a pure sine wave UPS with high-wattage units.
